And so I have laid my mother to rest. On Friday, we gathered to celebrate her long life. I have spent the morning writing a piece about her dementia journey, which I hope to use as a fundraiser for the care home she lived in for four years. It's important for people to know there can be a positive side as my relationship with my mum improved during the four years we travelled on her dementia journey. I want to highlight the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring power of love, even in the face of life's most challenging trials. This journey has taught me invaluable lessons about patience, empathy, and the importance of cherishing every moment. The fundraiser will not only give back to the care home that supported us but will also stand as a testament to my mother's life and the love that continues to bind us together, even in her absence.

Now I am left to come to terms with my loss, which makes me consider my mortality. My life will change now. I can travel without worry or guilt. I can spend more time writing, my passion. Creating stories that reflect our humanity. My mum has taught me so much and I hope I will use this knowledge to challenge others to live their lives to the full.

So beautifully considered and written. It surely is a talent to be so reflective, let alone manage to write about your experience. What a gift to share your written words with others, in such a powerful and positive way.

Keep going and channel all of those emotions you feel in the weeks, months and years ahead into your writing.

Beautiful words Helen and the loss of your mother I feel gives time for reflection and to especially question our own vulnerability.

The dementia journey is a difficult road to travel but Im pleased the last few years were so positive.

Helen - it is very uplifting to hear that you have managed to find a lot of positives in a sad situation. Your Mum will always be part of you - and I know you'll treasure the memories from the last four years and be able to create something wonderful from them.
