You can learn so much from other writers. Think about the elements of your favourite books. What makes them special? What is it about the narrative that pulls you into the story. The key to being a good writer is being a good reader.

Now you are getting words on paper in your daily pages - think about expanding that idea. Look through your writing and take a thought and expand it. Think about where you are, describe the surroundings, what time of day is it, if outside what is the weather like? Can you identify any specific sounds, smells or tastes associated with this moment. Try to write words to describe these. Elements like this can enhance your readers' experience, so start trying to include this in your writing. Here's an example to get you started.

The image shows a weathered wooden landing stretching into the distance over calm, blue water. The planks show the wear of salt and time. Their surface indented with passaging countless footsteps. Metal railings run along both sides, their vertical slats cold to the touch, casting shadows across the still water.

The sea reflects the soft blue of the evening sky, giving it an almost dreamlike quality. A solitary bird glides overhead, its dark silhouette drawing your gaze to the horizon where water meets sky.

You hear the gentle lapping against the pier's supports below, and the occasional creak of the weathered boards. The click of the metal railings cooling in the evening air. The air, rich with a briny scent and taste of salt water mixed with the earthy smell of wet wood and seaweed. Serenity washes over you as you take a deep, cleansing breath of the salty air.
